What is MTBE?
Methyl tert-butyl ether (mtbe), also known as tert-butyl methyl ether, is an organic compound with a structural formula (ch3)3coch3. Mtbe is a volatile, flammable, and colorless liquid that is sparingly soluble in water.Primarily used as a fuel additive, mtbe is blended into gasoline to increase its octane rating and knock resistance, and reduce unwanted emissions.

What is MTBE Used for?
- Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), also known as MTBE fuel (CAS 1634-04-4), is mainly used as a gasoline additive due to its excellent anti-knockout properties. It increases the octane number of the fuel and can be cracked to produce isobutene, which is an important intermediate in chemical production.
- MTBE fuel has high compatibility with gasoline and low water solubility, which helps to reduce environmental pollution when used as a fuel additive. In addition to its role in the energy sector, MTBE is an analytical solvent, extractant and stripper in chromatography, including high-pressure liquid chromatography. In addition, it can form azeotropes with polar solvents such as water, methanol and ethanol, increasing its versatility in industrial and laboratory applications.
- MTBE (CAS No. 1634-04-4) has slight anesthetic properties, which may be related to its particular application.
