What Is MDPE Plastic?

Medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) is a type of polyethylene defined by a density range of 0.926–0.940 g/cm3. It is less dense than HDPE, which is more common.

MDPE can be produced by chromium/silica catalysts, Ziegler-Natta catalysts or metallocene catalysts. MDPE has good shock and drop resistance properties. It also is less notch sensitive than HDPE. Stress cracking resistance is better than that of HDPE. MDPE is typically used in gas pipes and fittings, sacks, shrink film, packaging film, carrier bags, and screw closures.

Examples of MDPE plastic

Water and Gas Pipelines: MDPE is commonly used in the construction of water and gas transmission pipelines due to its resistance to cracking and ability to safely transport these fluids.

Outdoor Storage Tanks: MDPE can be used to manufacture outdoor storage tanks for a variety of liquids, including chemicals and agricultural materials.

Playground Equipment: Many playground structures, such as slides and climbing equipment, are made from MDPE plastic because of its durability and ability to withstand outdoor conditions.

Geothermal Heat Exchangers: MDPE is used in geothermal systems for its heat resistance and long-term reliability.

Pipes and Conduits: MDPE pipes and conduits are used to protect electrical and telecommunication cables, providing insulation and protection from the environmental elements.

Drainage: MDPE is used in drainage systems and culverts due to its corrosion resistance and long service life.
