Polybutadiene Rubber (PBR) Manufacturing Process

Polybutadiene is built up by chemically linking multiple molecules of butadiene to form giant molecules or polymers. Cured polybutadiene rubber imparts excellent abrasion resistance and low rolling resistance. Polybutadiene rubber is the second largest volume synthetic rubber produced.

Main process flow
Polybutadiene Rubber (PBR) production is usually divided into the following steps:

  • Polymerization reaction: Butadiene monomer is polymerized in the presence of a suitable catalyst to generate long-chain polymers.
  • Removal of inactive substances: The polymer solution is distilled to remove inactive substances, and then a promoter is added.
  • Modification reaction: under appropriate time and conditions, an appropriate amount of modifier is added to react to improve the properties of the rubber
  • Refining: the rubber is treated by filtering, removing impurities, and concentrating.
  • Monomer recovery: The monomer in the wastewater is recovered, and the recovery rate can reach more than 90%.

PBR Processing
PBR is masticated, mixed, formed, and cured. Curing is usually done with sulfur or peroxide systems after blending with other elastomers. PBR is often blended with other elastomers to enhance processability.
