what is rhamnose?

Rhamnose, also known as 6-deoxy-L-mannose, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₅. It is widely found in plant polysaccharides, glycosides, plant gums, and bacterial polysaccharides. With a sweetness of about 33% that of sucrose, rhamnose can be used to assess intestinal permeability, serve as a sweetener, and be utilized in the production of flavors and fragrances.
Application Fields
Food Industry: Rhamnose can be used as a sweetener and food additive to enhance sweetness and improve texture.

Cosmetics: Rhamnose is a sugar compound that can be derived from natural sources such as buckthorn and other plants. It plays a variety of roles in skin care formulations, including functioning as a prebiotic, which serves as an energy source for skin's probiotics to thrive and restore a healthy microbiome balance.
Among them, rhamnose, a deoxy sugar, was pointed as an excellent option to reduce skin aging signs, inducing aged fibroblasts to present "young-like" characteristics.

Pharmaceuticals: Rhamnose-associated molecules are attracting attention because they are present in bacteria but not mammals, making them potentially useful as antibacterial agents. Additionally, they are also valuable for tumor immunotherapy.
