Basic Characteristics:
Polyethylene (HDPE) is an opaque white, waxy material with a specific gravity lower than that of water, ranging from 0.941 to 0.960. It is soft and tough, slightly harder than LDPE, and also slightly more elongated. It is non-toxic and odorless.
Main Advantages:
HDPE is resistant to acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. It has excellent electrical insulation properties and maintains a certain degree of toughness even at low temperatures. Its surface hardness, tensile strength, rigidity, and overall mechanical strength are higher than those of LDPE and close to those of PP. It is tougher than PP, though its surface finish is not as smooth.
Combustion Characteristics:
Polyethylene (HDPE) is flammable and continues to burn after being removed from the flame. The upper part of the flame is yellow, while the lower part is blue. During combustion, it melts, produces dripping liquid, emits no black smoke, and gives off a paraffin-like odor.
