Cyclohexanone (CAS 108-94-1) is an organic ketone serving dual industrial roles: as a process solvent and as a chemical intermediate.
On the intermediate side, it is the primary feedstock for caprolactam-via cyclohexanone oxime and Beckmann rearrangement-and for adipic acid through controlled oxidation, linking it directly to Nylon 6 and Nylon 66 production respectively.
As a solvent, it is specified in alkyd and epoxy coating systems, gravure and packaging inks, solvent-based adhesives, and photosensitive resin formulations. Beyond these volume applications, cyclohexanone is converted to downstream fine chemicals including peroxycyclohexanone, 2-methylbenzophenone, antioxidant 4010 (N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine), and cyclohexanone-toluene resins, which function as intermediates in agrochemical and pharmaceutical synthesis.
