What is the difference between meta-xylene (CAS: 108-38-3) and mixed Xylene?

Chemical Composition

Mixed Xylene is a colorless, transparent liquid mixture composed of o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and ethylbenzene. It has a relative density of about 0.86, a flash point below 28 °C, is soluble in ethanol and ether but insoluble in water, with a boiling range of 136.5–145 °C. Based on aromatic content, it can be classified into three types: solvent grade, isomer grade, and crude xylene, each used in different industrial applications.

 

M-Xylene, also known as 1,3-dimethylbenzene, CAS No. 108-38-3, molecular formula C8H10, has a melting point of -48 °C, boiling point of 139 °C, flash point of 25 °C (CC), and density of 0.868 g/cm³. It is a colorless transparent liquid with a toluene-like odor, insoluble in water but miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, and most other organic solvents.

 

Mixed xylene uses
Mixed xylene, a mixture of o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and ethylbenzene, can be separated into its isomers when used as a chemical raw material. As a mixture, it is mainly used as a solvent in paints and coatings, as an additive in aviation gasoline, and as a common solvent in pesticide emulsifiable concentrate formulations.

  • M-Xylene (CAS: 108-38-3),primarily used to produce isophthalic acid (IPA), an important raw material in resins, coatings, PET plastics, and reinforced plastics.
  • Also used as a solvent in certain chemical processes.
