What is the difference between acrylamide and polyacrylamide?

The substance of acrylamide is different from polyacrylamide

Polyacrylamide
Polyacrylamide is a linear polymer, and its products are mainly divided into two forms: dry powder and colloid types. According to its average molecular weight, it can be divided into low molecular weight (<1 million), medium molecular weight (2 to 4 million), and high molecular weight (>7 million) types. According to its structure, it can be divided into non-ionic, anionic, and cationic types.
Acrylamide
Acrylamide is a white crystalline chemical substance, which is the raw material for the production of polyacrylamide. Polyacrylamide is mainly used for water purification, pulp processing, and internal coating of pipelines. Starch foods are prone to producing acrylamide when cooked at a high temperature (>120℃).

Acrylamide and Polyacrylamide: Distinct Properties and Applications

Polyacrylamide powder
Polyacrylamide is a water-soluble linear polymer created through the free radical polymerization of acrylamide monomers. It exhibits excellent flocculating properties and can significantly lower the resistance between fluids during flow. Based on its ionic nature, polyacrylamide is classified into four categories: nonionic, anionic, cationic, and amphoteric types.

PAM is generally insoluble in most common organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, ether, and hydrocarbons. However, it can dissolve in certain polar organic solvents-like acetic acid, chloroacetic acid, acrylic acid, ethylene glycol, glycerol, molten urea, and formamide-but often requires heating to do so, which limits its practical use in these media.

Acrylamide
Acrylamide typically appears as a white crystalline powder with a density of 1.32 g/cm³, a glass transition temperature of 188°C, and a softening point near 210°C. Even after standard drying, it retains some moisture and tends to reabsorb water from the air if exposed. When freeze-dried, it forms a soft white, amorphous solid, while drying from solution results in a partially transparent, glass-like material. Fully dehydrated acrylamide is brittle and white in appearance.

Commercial-grade acrylamide is often moderately dried, containing around 5% to 15% moisture. When cast into a film on glass, it produces a clear, rigid, and fragile membrane.

As a dedicated supplier of acrylamide, we offer premium-grade products at competitive pricing.

Applications

Polyacrylamide and acrylamide are both widely used in industrial applications.

PAM Polyacrylamide is mainly used as a gelling agent, flocculant, and lubricant. It is extensively applied in water treatment processes, such as wastewater purification, sewage treatment, and solid-liquid separation.

Acrylamide, as a monomer, is used to synthesize polymers like polyacrylamide. It also serves as an important chemical intermediate for the synthesis of other organic compounds.
