2-methyl-1-propanol, also known as Isobutanol, IBA, or alcohol isobutanol, is a colorless, transparent liquid with a distinct pungent odor. It is slightly soluble in water but easily soluble in ethanol and ether. As a low-carbon aliphatic alcohol, isobutanol alcohol is considered a low-toxicity chemical but has strong irritating effects on mucous membranes, the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. It is flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air. The molecular formula is CH₃CH₂CHOHCH₃. One of the most important iso butanol uses is as a raw material for organic synthesis and as a solvent.

What is 2-methyl-1-propanol used for?
- Isobutanol is widely used, mainly as a raw material for the production of plasticizers, antioxidants, fruit essences, and artificial musk. As an intermediate in organic synthesis, IBA is primarily used in the pesticide industry to synthesize isobutyronitrile, an intermediate of diazinon.
- Alcohol isobutanol is also used in the production of petroleum additives, antioxidants, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol, isobutyl acetate (used as a coating solvent), synthetic rubber, and pharmaceuticals. Among the many iso butanol uses, its role in coatings and chemical synthesis is particularly significant.
- When used as an extraction solvent, isobutanol alcohol can separate lithium chloride from mixtures with sodium or potassium chloride and is used for purifying salts of strontium, barium, and lithium.
- 2-methyl-1-propanol also acts as a co-solvent for nitrocellulose, and as a solvent for ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, various oils, rubber, and natural resins. However, it must never be used in agricultural plastics, as 2-methyl-1-propanol can lead to crop death.
