Traits

• Benzoic acid is white with silky scales or needle-like crystals or crystalline powder; light; odourless or slightly odorous; slightly volatile in hot air; aqueous solution shows acidic reaction.
• It is soluble in ethanol, trichloromethane or ether, soluble in boiling water, slightly soluble in water.

Purpose

• Reagent for detecting manganese, mercury, nickel, magnesium, titanium, tungsten, uranium, nitrate, nitrite. Used for the separation of trivalent and tetravalent ions (e.g. iron, aluminium, chromium, etc.). 
• Chemical synthesis: Benzoic acid is an important raw material for the synthesis of flavours, dyes, flexible polyurethanes and fluorescent substances.
