Products Description
Cyclohexanone (CAS 108-94-1) is a colorless oily liquid at room temperature, slightly soluble in water (8.7 g/L at 20°C) and miscible with most organic solvents. Fresh, high-purity material is water-white (APHA ≤10) with a characteristic earthy ketone odor; trace phenol content shifts the odor toward mint-like. Color develops toward pale yellow as oxidative degradation occurs during storage, making APHA color a standard incoming inspection parameter.
Industrial Applications of Cyclohexanone
Chemical Intermediate
Approximately 95% of global cyclohexanone consumption is directed toward two derivatives: caprolactam-produced via cyclohexanone oxime formation and Beckmann rearrangement, the monomer for Nylon 6-and adipic acid, obtained through nitric acid oxidation of KA oil, the monomer for Nylon 66.
Process Solvent
Cyclohexanone is specified in nitrocellulose lacquers, alkyd, epoxy, vinyl, and acrylic coating systems, PVC and contact adhesives, gravure and packaging inks, rubber compounding, and photosensitive resin formulations. Its KB value of 95–98 supports complete resin dissolution without co-solvent blending in most applications.
Fine Chemical Intermediates
Downstream derivatives include peroxycyclohexanone, 2-methylbenzophenone, antioxidant 4010 (N-isopropyl-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine), and cyclohexanone-toluene resins, used as intermediates in agrochemical and pharmaceutical synthesis.
