Characteristics of Dimethyl Sulfoxide

• DMSO, with its high polarity, high boiling point, excellent thermal stability, aprotic nature, and miscibility with water, can dissolve in ethanol, propanol, benzene, chloroform, and most other organic substances. It is therefore known as a "universal solvent."
• In the presence of acids and under heating, DMSO can produce small amounts of methyl mercaptan, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfide, methanesulfonate, and other compounds.
• At high temperatures, it may decompose, and it reacts violently with chlorine. When burned in air, it emits a light blue flame.
