What is the difference between cyclohexane and cyclohexane?

Cyclic cyclohexane is saturated hydrocarbon and cyclic cyclohexene is unsaturated hydrocarbon as cyclohexane has one ring whereas cyclohexene has one ring with one double bond.

Comparison Table

Feature Cyclohexane (CAS 110-82-7) Cyclohexene (CAS 110-83-8)
Chemical Formula C₆H₁₂ C₆H₁₀
Structure Saturated, all single bonds Unsaturated, one C=C double bond
Type Cycloalkane (alkane) Cycloalkene (alkene)
Physical State Colorless liquid Colorless liquid
Boiling Point ~80.7 °C ~83 °C
Reactivity Relatively stable More reactive (due to double bond)
Main Uses Solvent, adipic acid & nylon production Intermediate for nylon, epoxy resins, coatings
Combustibility Flammable Flammable, more prone to reactions

Key Applications

  • Cyclohexane: Widely used in the production of adipic acid, caprolactam, and nylon fibers, as well as a solvent in chemical processes.
  • Cyclohexene: Mainly used as an intermediate for cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, nylon intermediates, and in polymer and coating industries.
