Epichlorohydrin properties
Epichlorohydrin, also known as 3-chloro-1,2-propylene oxide, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₃H₅ClO. It is a colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. Epichlorohydrin is primarily used as a raw material in organic synthesis, and also finds applications as a solvent, plasticizer, and surfactant.

Epichlorohydrin Uses

• Epichlorohydrin is mainly converted into bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, a key intermediate in the production of epoxy resins. It is also used as a precursor for monomers in the manufacture of other resins and polymers.
• Another important application is its conversion into synthetic glycerol. However, the rapid expansion of biodiesel production, in which glycerol is a byproduct, has created an oversupply in the market, making synthetic production economically unviable. As a result, synthetic glycerol is now limited to high-purity pharmaceutical and biotech applications, where stringent quality standards must be met.
• Epichlorohydrin is a versatile precursor for synthesizing various organic compounds. For instance, it is converted into glycidyl nitrate, an energetic binder used in explosives and propellant formulations. This reaction involves treating epichlorohydrin with an alkali nitrate, such as sodium nitrate, to produce glycidyl nitrate and an alkali chloride.
• Additionally, epichlorohydrin is used as a solvent for cellulose, resins, and paints, and has been employed as an insect fumigant.
