Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) is an organic compound with the chemical formula (CH₂OH)₂. It is the simplest aliphatic dihydric alcohol and exhibits typical alcohol properties, such as forming ethers and esters, and being oxidized to acids or aldehydes. It can also undergo condensation reactions to form ethers or substitution reactions with halogens.

 

MEG is mainly used for two purposes: as a raw material in the production of polyester fibers and in antifreeze formulations. It is an odorless, colorless, slightly sweet-tasting, and viscous liquid at room temperature.

• It is also used as a solvent for dyes and inks, an antifreeze agent for engines, a gas dehydration agent, and in the manufacture of resins. In addition, it serves as a wetting agent for cellophane, fibers, leather, and adhesives.
