Properties
4-Methyl-2-pentanone(MIBK) is a kind of colourless transparent liquid. Aromatic ketone odour. Miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, etc., soluble in water (1-91%). Its vapour forms explosive mixture with air, and can cause combustion and explosion when exposed to open fire and high heat. It can react strongly with oxidant. If it meets high heat, the pressure inside the container increases, there is a danger of cracking and explosion. Dissolve some plastics, resins and rubber.

Uses
4-Methyl-2-pentanone(MIBK) is an effective separator for some inorganic salts, and can separate plutonium from uranium, niobium from tantalum, and zirconium from hafnium. It can also be used as anticoagulant and diluent of vinyl resin. Excellent mid-boiling point solvent. Used as ore dressing agent, solvent for oil dewaxing, colouring agent for colour films, also used as solvent for tetracycline and pyrethroids and DDT, etc.. Also used in organic synthesis industry.
