Butyl ketone is methyl ethyl ketone, a colorless transparent liquid. Smells like acetone. It is volatile. It can be miscible with ethanol, ether, benzene, chloroform, and oil. Soluble in 4 parts of water, but solubility decreases with increasing temperature. It can form an azeotrope with water (11.3% water content), and the azeotrope point is 73.4ºC(containing butanone 88.7%). The relative density (d204) is 0.805. Freezing point -86ºC. Boiling point 79.6ºC. Refractive index (n15D)1.3814. Flashpoint 1.1 ° C. Low toxicity, median lethal dose (rats, oral)3300mG/kg. Flammable, vapor can form an explosive mixture with air, explosion limit of 1.81%~11.5%(volume). Vapor in high concentrations is narcotic.
