- Thionyl chloride is a colorless, pungent-smelling liquid that is flammable and emits smoke.
- Uses
Thionyl chloride is used as a chlorinating agent in organic synthesis, such as for chlorinating hydroxyl groups in alcohols, chlorinating carboxylic acids, acid anhydrides, and substituting chlorine in organic sulfonic or nitro compounds. It is also used to produce acyl chlorides and as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals, such as in the production of Tetramisole and Chloramphenicol. Additionally, it serves as a dehydrating agent and solvent.
