Is DCM (Dichloromethane) soluble in water?

DCM (Dichloromethane) and water are slightly soluble but not miscible.
Dichloromethane (ch2cl2) is a colorless, transparent, and volatile liquid with low solubility in water - about 1.3 g per 100 mL of water at 20°C, classifying it as slightly soluble. This limited solubility arises because dichloromethane is a nonpolar organic solvent, while water is a strongly polar solvent. The significant difference in intermolecular forces prevents them from forming a homogeneous mixture.

From a molecular standpoint, the hydrophobic methyl group and chlorine atoms in dichloromethane liquid hinder the formation of hydrogen bonds with water molecules, resulting in phase separation.

In industrial applications, this property is often utilized in liquid–liquid extraction or two-phase cleaning processes. For example, in electronic component cleaning, dcm methylene chloride can effectively remove grease and then separate cleanly from the aqueous phase.
