Liquid sodium chlorite is a chemical compound with several notable characteristics and uses:
Properties:
Appearance: A pale yellow to colorless liquid.
Chemical formula: NaClO₂.
Solubility: Readily soluble in water.
Uses:
Bleaching agent: Used in the textile and paper industries for bleaching fabrics and pulp. It provides an effective means of removing color impurities.
Water treatment: In water treatment processes, it can be used for disinfection and oxidation of contaminants. It helps in removing harmful microorganisms and organic compounds from water.
Industrial applications: Employed in various industrial processes for oxidation and purification purposes.
Does sodium chlorite react with water?
Sodium chlorite (NaClO₂) reacts with water.
The reaction is relatively slow under normal conditions. Sodium chlorite in water forms chlorous acid (HClO₂) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
NaClO₂ + H₂O → HClO₂ + NaOH
However, under certain conditions such as the presence of an acid or a catalyst, the reaction can be accelerated and produce other compounds. Chlorous acid is an unstable compound and can decompose further to release chlorine dioxide gas (ClO₂). This property is exploited in some applications where chlorine dioxide is generated on-site for disinfection purposes.
