Lauroyl chloride, also known as dodecanoyl chloride, is an organic compound. It is a colorless or light yellow transparent oily liquid at room temperature and pressure, with a strong pungent odor. It is soluble in ether and decomposes in water and alcohol. Its melting point is -17℃, boiling point is 134-137℃ (11mmHg), density is about 0.946g/ml (25℃), refractive index is 1.444-1.446, and flash point is 140℃. As the acid chloride of lauric acid, lauroyl chloride can be used to prepare free radical polymerization reagents and participate in various chemical reactions, such as conversion into ketones under the action of alkali; reaction with sodium azide, and rearrangement of acyl azide Curtius to undecyl isocyanate. It is also a common reagent for the preparation of docosyl peroxide, which is widely used in free radical polymerization reactions.
